Cree is a First Nations language spoken by about 120,000 people across much of Canada, making it one of the most widely spoken Indigenous languages in the country. While the different varieties of Cree share a common heritage, they can vary significantly—so much so that a Cree speaker from Alberta may have difficulty understanding a Cree speaker from Quebec.
Created by the Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre in 2011, this course features Swampy Cree, a variety spoken by about 2,500 people in Manitoba and Ontario. By learning Swampy Cree, students help celebrate and support a language that continues to connect communities with their history, traditions, and identity.
