Paiute
New course from 7000 Languages 2026 Reclaim and Sustain Fellow Cheyenne Stone (Paiute, Washoe), a member of the California Native Languages cohort. Cheyenne is a culture bearer dedicated to keeping Paiute Nüümü Language, songs, traditions, and cultural practices alive for future generations. Through lessons, songs, and activities in her course she shares knowledge and teachings passed down through her ancestors. Her work is rooted in honoring her language and culture while creating opportunities for people to learn, connect, and carry these traditions forward. Each lesson and song is a way of preserving identity, strengthening community, and helping ensure that Paiute Nüümü remains a living part of the future. Cheyenne shares, “As a cultural bearer, I am committed to teaching with respect, love, and pride, and to creating spaces where our language, songs, traditions, and cultural ways can continue to be learned, practiced and celebrated.”
