Menominee

Menominee is the language of the Menominee Nation of northeastern Wisconsin. A member of the Algonquian language family, it is one of the most distinctive Indigenous languages in North America, known for its complex grammar and extensive system of verb forms. The Menominee people have lived in the Great Lakes region for thousands of years and are especially recognized for their internationally studied model of sustainable forest management, maintaining a thriving forest on their reservation while surrounding areas were heavily logged.
Today, Menominee language learning is supported through programs at the Menominee Tribal School and Menominee Tribal College, as well as community-led initiatives that connect language learning with storytelling and education. Recent collaborations between local educators, students, and organizations such as MenominiYou are helping expand digital learning opportunities and create new resources for learners. These projects reflect the community’s ongoing commitment to increasing access to the Menominee language both in classrooms and online.
