Hupa
Na:tinixwe Mixine:whe (Hupa Language), is an Athabaskan language spoken by the Na:tinixwe people of the Hoopa Valley in Northern California. The language remains a vital part of community life and carries the stories, knowledge, and traditions of the people who have lived in the valley for countless generations. Ongoing revitalization efforts are helping ensure that Hupa continues to be learned and spoken by future generations.
Created by 7000 Languages' 2024 Language Revitalization Fellow Carina Peterson in partnership with Xinewh-ding Inc., this course was inspired by the Fluency Transfer System developed by the Salish School of Spokane. Drawing on recordings from first-language Hupa elders and the contributions of families and community members, the course helps learners build practical language skills while honoring the voices that have preserved the language.
