Gaguaz

Gagauz is a Turkic language belonging to the Oghuz branch of the Turkic language family. It is the native language of the Gagauz people, who live primarily in southern Moldova and southern Ukraine, particularly in the Odesa region. Despite being one of the oldest Turkic languages, the number of speakers has declined significantly in recent decades. According to UNESCO estimates, the speaker population has fallen from approximately 160,000 to 80,000 between 1990 and 2020, highlighting the urgent need for language preservation. This course focuses specifically on the unique dialect and traditions of the Gagauz community in Ukraine.
Created by 7000 Languages Fellow Karyna Keliohlo, this is the first online Gagauz language course designed for Ukrainian speakers. Combining practical language lessons with grammar, songs, stories, and cultural activities, the course encourages learners to explore not only the language itself but also the rich traditions of the Gagauz people. By learning Gagauz, students help support the preservation of a unique cultural heritage and contribute to the future of one of Europe's endangered minority languages.
