El Molo
El Molo, or Gurapau ("people of the lake"), is the traditional language of the El Molo people, an Indigenous fishing community whose lives have long been connected to the shores of Lake Turkana in northern Kenya. Belonging to the Lowland East Cushitic language family, El Molo is closely related to the languages of neighboring communities in the Horn of Africa. Today, the language and the community itself face an uncertain future as generations of cultural assimilation, environmental change, and displacement have left only a small number of speakers.
This course offers learners the opportunity to explore the El Molo language and the rich heritage of the Gurapau people. Rooted in a culture shaped by the waters of Lake Turkana, the course helps preserve the stories, traditions, and knowledge of one of Africa's most endangered Indigenous communities while supporting ongoing efforts to keep the language alive for future generations.
