Comanche
The Comanche language is part of the Central Numic branch of the Uto-Aztecan language family and is closely related to the Shoshone and Panamint languages. Traditionally spoken by the Comanche people across the southern Great Plains, the language is most strongly associated today with southwestern Oklahoma, particularly around the Lawton area. Fewer than 50 fluent speakers remain, making ongoing language preservation and revitalization efforts especially important.
Created by the Comanche Nation Language Department in 2023, these courses introduce learners to the Comanche orthography adopted in 1993 while building a foundation in everyday vocabulary and conversation. Whether reconnecting with their heritage or exploring the language for the first time, students help support the continuation of an important part of Comanche culture and identity.
