Chochenyo
The Muwekma Ohlone Chochenyo language is the traditional language of the Muwekma Ohlone people, the Indigenous people of the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley. Although the language was deeply impacted by colonization and generations of forced assimilation, we believe our language was not lost but put to sleep. It is now our responsibility to awaken it again by speaking it.
This course was created to provide an accessible and meaningful introduction to the language, culture, and history of the Chochenyo-speaking Ohlone people. Through learning and speaking Chochenyo, students help support the continued revitalization of an important part of California Native heritage.
This course was created by the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe with support from 7000 Languages and the National Native American Language Resource Center (N-NALRC, or Aanikoobijigeng).
