Bororo

Bororo is the ancestral language of the Bororo people, who call themselves Boe Bororo, meaning "people of the patio"—a reference to the circular layout of their traditional villages in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Today, there are about 3,000 Bororo people, but only about half still speak the language. Although Bororo is taught in local schools, in some communities it is rarely spoken in everyday life, giving younger generations few opportunities to practice it and placing the language at risk of disappearing.
This course was created by Lorena Martín as part of the 2023 Fellowship Program. Working alongside Dr. Fabrício Gerardi and members of the Bororo community, the project brings together language documentation and community knowledge to help preserve and celebrate the Bororo language and the rich cultural traditions it carries for future generations.
